This talk will focus on building applications with web services. SOAP based web services came out of two basic needs. First, many applications need to be cross platform - they need to run on Java, .NET, Ruby, etc. Second, they need to be transport independent. That is they should be able to run internally on transports such as JMS and/or penetrate the firewall with HTTP. We'll look at how these two criteria resulted in a set of specifications to build SOAP based services and some of the software surrounding these specifications. There is another way to build web services as well: REST. REST is the architectural style which HTTP is based on. We'll close the session taking a look at how you can use REST to build scalable, distributed applications with a few simple constraints.
